Juventus director Federico Cherubini has hailed Manchester United for acting like ‘a club with tradition’ in talks over Cristiano Ronaldo following Manchester City’s approach for the forward.

Ronaldo sealed a sensational return to Old Trafford during the final days of the summer transfer window in a deal worth an initial £13m with a further £5m in potential add-ons.

Prior to that, City were in advanced talks to sign the United hero, holding talks with his agent Jorge Mendes and Juventus.

When United’s interest became known however Ronaldo was determined to return to the club.

Discussing talks between Juventus and City, Cherubini aimed a dig at the Premier League champions, revealing they were not prepared to pay a penny for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

‘There weren’t the right conditions to do so,” Juventus director Federico Cherubini told Tuttosport when asked about talks with City.

‘Manchester United behaved differently, as a club with tradition.

‘There couldn’t be a different end, given the way Ronaldo had spoken to us. We couldn’t force a player to stay in a context that he didn’t recognize anymore.

‘We respect Ronaldo, but I share the same view as our President: ‘Juventus’ history is made by great champions, coaches and directors, but the club remains the most important thing.’

Ronaldo is in contention to make his second debut for United against Newcastle on Saturday.

‘He has been having a good pre-season with Juventus, he has played for the national team,’ said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at his pre-match news conference.

‘He has had a good week with us here and he will definitely be on the pitch at some point that is for sure.’
