Juventus and Inter Milan are keeping an eye on Chris Smalling’s situation at Roma, with the defender yet to sign a contract offered to him by his current club.
Smalling’s current deal expires at the end of the season, but Roma have the option to extend it by a further year and they intend to do so, although it will be on less than his current £3m salary.
Sky Sports Italia report that a new two-year deal was already offered to Smalling in October, but that is also on the reduced salary, while Smalling wants more.
With some uncertainty over his future, the report states that Juventus and Inter Milan are monitoring the situation and are considering pouncing if the England international becomes available.
Smalling turned 33 last month so will be wanting to make the most of the last significant contract he is likely to sign in his career.
Roma may also be tempted to cash in on him for a transfer fee in the summer rather than lose him on a free in 2024.
However, Italian publication Il Messaggero report that Smalling wants to stay at Roma and the club are keen to keep hold of him, so an agreement over extending his stay may well be found.
Smalling has been an important part of the Romat team since moving to Italy in 2019 and continues to be under Jose Mourinho’s management.
The former Manchester United and Fulham centre-back has played 117 times for Roma, scoring 10 goals and winning the UEFA Conference League earlier this year.
