Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool still need to ‘find a formation’ ahead of their Premier League opener against Chelsea on Sunday.

Liverpool’s pre-season campaign ended on Monday evening as goals from Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz sealed a 3-1 win over SV Darmstadt 98, who gained promotion to the Bundesliga at the end of last season.

Klopp’s side will now travel to Stamford Bridge on Sunday for their first Premier League fixture of the new season against Chelsea.

But the Liverpool manager concedes that he has not settled on how his side will line up against Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

‘It’s clear, we looked fresh and really good, in the next six days we have to find a formation for Chelsea and not for the whole season,’ Klopp said after Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Darmstadt.

‘Nobody got injured, everyone got through okay.

‘There is some football stuff we have to do and sort, but that’s normal. Pre-season always goes until the first international break, we have to use these weeks without international football.

‘In Germany we could train a lot on physical and tactical stuff, we came out of the tour without big problems. It’s not done and dusted, we have four or five sessions then we have to put in a proper fight. Let’s go.’

Klopp was also buoyed by the performance of Alexis Mac Allister, who impressed in a deeper role at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield against Darmstadt.

‘He’s a top-class player with and without the ball,’ Klopp said.

‘We had our moments where we were too open, we will work on it, we will test some things.

‘In a compact formation, Alexis can play there, if it’s open should he play there? No. But he showed he is a brilliant footballer and did really well.’
