Jude Bellingham says he intends to be trying to win major tournaments with England for the next 10-15 years, believing the Three Lions should not shy away from aiming for the top.

After runs to the final of the European Championships and both the semi and quarter-finals of World Cups under Gareth Southgate, England have come close to breaking their lengthy period without success.

Bellingham hopes he will help England win the Euros for the first time ever next summer and he will keep aiming for European and World honours for the foreseeable future.

‘My goal for the next 12 months with the England team will be the same for the next 10-15 years: try to win major tournaments,’ Bellingham told Reach Football.

‘I think we can’t shy away from saying that now. We’ve come close in the last few tournaments, and to now go back and say: “Ah yeah, that was enjoyable, but now we have to be more realistic”…I don’t see the point.

‘We should use the experiences we’ve got from previous tournaments to push on and bring some silverware home. That’s the common goal that we are striving towards and we aren’t afraid to say that anymore.

‘In the last few years it’s been a case of hiding that expectation, so that we never fail. We’ve got to be willing to say it, so we can achieve it.’

Bellingham has made a sensational start to life at Real Madrid since his summer move from Borussia Dortmund, scoring 10 goals in his first 10 games.

Asked whether the 20-year-old is the best player in the world right now, Southgate would not be pinned down, but said the midfielder is in the conversation.

‘No, it’s not a stupid question. I haven’t seen everybody and studied everybody playing,’ said the England boss.

‘All I can say is he’s at one of the biggest clubs in the world, arguably the biggest, and he’s playing exceptionally well and he’s currently the match-winner for them so he’s in a brilliant place.’
