Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has mocked Rio Ferdinand’s criticism of him after the Manchester United legend accused the Italian of being unable to run.

Jorginho enjoyed the finest season of his career last term, winning the Champions League with the Blues before lifting the European Championship with Italy.

That’s put the midfielder in the running to win the Ballon d’Or and it comes after Jorginho’s difficult start to life in England following his £52m arrival from Napoli in 2018.

The 29-year-old came in for fierce criticism during his first 18 months in the Premier League and a clip of Ferdinand criticisng the Italian in 2019 has recently gone viral on social media.

In the clip, Ferdinand says: ‘He gets no assists, he’s not a great defender, once a game gets like this against the big teams he gets overrun in midfield and he can’t run.’

Jorginho has since put those criticisms to bed by becoming a mainstay for the Champions League holders and the Italian couldn’t resist a dig at Ferdinand by sharing the clip on his Instagram to mock the former England captain’s critique.

Speaking after his first season in west London, Jorginho admitted he takes time to settle at new clubs and is used to being written off.

‘My start at Chelsea made me miss it [Napoli] even more,’ said Jorginho.

‘We all remember what they were saying, right? I was too slow. I was too weak. I was Sarri’s son. Man, it made me so angry.

‘But listen, they underestimated me. You see, I’ve had a turbulent start at every club I’ve been with. Every club. It’s incredible.

‘When I came to Verona, nobody wanted me. They sent me on loan to the fourth division. Nobody wanted me there either. But I kept working and I won respect. I went back to Verona and we went up to Serie A.

‘I had a hard year at Napoli, too, and then Sarri came and changed everything.

‘So the Chelsea stuff? Puh! I just used the criticism as fuel. I was thinking, ‘These people are going to be embarrassed.’
