The former Liverpool captain joined the Saudi Pro League side in July in a hugely controversial move, signing a deal reportedly worth £700,000-per-week.
Just six months later, he returns to European football, signing a two-and-a-half year with Ajax.
Following confirmation of the move, Henderson thanked Al-Ettifaq and admitted it was ‘not an easy decision’ to walk away.
‘I’m sad to say that I will be leaving Al Ettifaq with immediate effect,’ Henderson wrote on Twitter.
‘It wasn’t an easy decision but one that I feel is best for me and my family. I want to take this opportunity to thank the club & the fans for all the support during my time. I really felt the love from Day One.
‘I’ll keep watching & hoping for your success. Good luck for the future.’
Henderson leaves the club after making just 19 appearances.
Al Ettifaq club president Samer Al Misehal suggested the club were reluctant to terminate Henderson’s contract but saw it as the best solution to avoid ‘further distraction’.
‘Firstly, the club would like to thank Jordan for his efforts and wish him the best for his future endeavours,’ Al Misehal said.
‘We are always respectful of our players. The club and Jordan believe this quick decision, without any delay or further distraction, has been made for both the overall good of the club and for Jordan.’
Henderson has long been an LGBTQ+ ally throughout his career in the Premier League and with the national team.
His move however angered LGBTQ+ groups and their allies given the England international’s previous vocal support for the gay community.
Henderson continued to be picked for England during his time in Saudi and will hope a return to Europe will boost his chances of being selected for the Euro 2024 squad this summer.
