John Barnes believes Arsenal’s recent upturn in results is down to the club’s backing of manager Mikel Arteta.

Arteta was under fire from a large section of the fanbase after Arsenal started the season with three consecutive Premier League losses to Brentford, Chelsea and Manchester City.

Arsenal were without some of their best players during their early season struggles, with Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes and Thomas Partey all spending time on the sidelines through either injury or Covid-19.

But the Spanish boss, helped by the return of some of his key players, has since turned things around at the Emirates, with the club currently on a four-match unbeaten streak in the top flight.

And former Liverpool winger Barnes believes that the club’s changes in fortunes is mostly down to the loyalty they have shown in their manager.

‘Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White have played a huge part in Arsenal’s change of fortune in recent weeks. But more importantly, Mikel Arteta has been supported by the fans and the hierarchy,’ he said.

‘When you support a manager, believe in him, and the players believe in him, this is what can happen.

‘This is a testament to Arsenal fans, the owners and people supporting Arteta even in difficult times. I’m not certain they’ve turned the corner, but they are doing much better.

‘The better players have come in and aided the situation, but it truly is down to the support and those that believe in his hard work.’

Arsenal will be looking to continue their fine run of form when they host Crystal Palace on Monday night, in a match which will see former Gunner and current Eagles boss Patrick Vieira return to the Emirates.
