Position : Vessel Technical Manager – Lagos (Expatriate)

Our client is seeking a Vessel Technical Manager in Lagos who will ensure vessels are maintained to international regulations and company procedures by dutifully implementing and enforcing Engine Planned Maintenance System on Barge/Vessel under contract, ensuring all necessary daily maintenance activities on all barge/vessel machineries are carried out, forms properly filled, and reports sent as required.

  • Raise proper requisitions following company standards as to maintain level of spares on board and to close out any noted defects.
  • Monitor Barge/Vessel Class Certifications relating to machinery and notify all concerned department of impending vessel inspections by Class surveyors, government agencies and clients, while liaising with the Management/Marine Manager.
  • Ensure all defects and breakdowns, are closed out same within a shortest possible time frame, same must be reported to the management.
  • Eliminate/Minimize vessel downtime on projects.
  • Maintain monthly inspection of all engine logbooks while liaising with the Marine manager, to ensure proper entries, trace technical lapses and proffer constructive corrections and solutions.
  • Conduct joint monthly Barge/vessel routine inspection with the Chief Engineer/Master, with a view to identifying vessel defects and technical lapses while ensuring close out of same within a shortest possible time frame.
  • Participate in safety management system review meetings with the Vessel/Barge Officers
  • Report and investigate all machinery breakdowns, ensuring all necessary root and remote causes are identified, mitigating factors set and implemented. This is to be carried out in conjunction with the operations units.
  • Deal all non-conformities covering technical procedures of S.M.S both ashore and afloat.
  • Optimize machinery usage, ensuring minimized AGO consumption.
  • Receive all Liquid Bulk on the Barge/vessel and report daily consumption to management.
  • Prepare Dry-docking list of Barge/vessel in view of Special Surveys.
  • Noting that Record keeping is paramount to Barge/vessels smooth operation, ensure impeccable record keeping of all Machinery operations, spares, defects, and repairs.
  • Oversees all operational activities to ensure high quality and optimized service delivery.
  • Ensures the attainment of set operational efficiency and quality targets
  • Optimises fleet capacity utilisation and standardization
  • Investigates new opportunities for deriving value from marine services competencies
  • Supervises Operations and Vessel budget preparation
  • Controls the assigned budget and actively seek operational leverage to increase cost efficiency
  • Carries-out operational budget analysis for management and ensures compliance with budget
  • Reviews monthly operational budget results, implements monthly variance reporting as compared to budget and advice on expenditure trends.
  • Develops and maintains internal controls and policies for an effective operations system
  • Deals with non-conformities covering ship and shore based operations.
  • Provides full cooperation to regulatory bodies regarding marine and technical operations.
  • Develops and progresses the new-build strategy and provides input to contract concept selection
  • Enforces a zero downtime preventive vessel maintenance policy regime
  • Provides all the necessary support to ensure timely port turnaround and shipyard repair activities.
  • Monitors/rectifies non-compliance to vessel operating and SMS procedures.

Required profile for job ad : Vessel Technical Manager – Lagos (Expatriate)

Skills Required and profile :

  • Knowledge of Ship building and ship docking/ drawings/work scopes
  • In-depth knowledge of vessel management methodologies, tools, and best practices.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage complex vessels from initiation to completion.
  • Experience in budgeting, cost control, and financial management.
  • Familiarity with industry-specific health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to make informed decisions under pressure.
  • Proficiency in vessel management software tools.

Profile required :

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture or Marine Management
  • Minimum of 10 years experience as a marine operations manager
  • Previous experience in emerging markets / Africa / Nigeria is a plus
  • Internationally recognized shipping qualification
  • Vessel management certification (if applicable) is a plus.
