Payroll Specialist & HR Generalist – Sub-Saharan Africa
Location: Nairobi, Johannesburg, Lagos
Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented HR Generalist to join our team, with a special focus on Payroll with involvement in Compliance, People Management, and Employee Relations for our HR operations in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in HR transactional work relating to payroll administration, change management, and working in a multi-cultural matrix environment.
Job Responsibilities

  • Oversee end-to-end payroll processing for Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, ensuring accuracy and timeliness including resolving payroll discrepancies providing support to employees with payroll-related inquiries, and ensuring payroll processes align with local regulations and company policies in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa.
  • Collaborate with Payroll Service Providers as well as finance and HR teams to ensure seamless integration of payroll data with overall financial reporting.
  • Employee Records Management.
  • Coordinate the onboarding process for new hires, including paperwork, orientation, and training.
  • Handle offboarding tasks such as exit interviews, return of company property, and termination paperwork.
  • Assist employees with benefits enrollment, changes, and inquiries collaborate with benefits providers, and manage benefit-related paperwork.
  • Being a positive change agent regarding diversity and learning; assisting in resolving workplace conflicts, misconduct, and performance management issues.
  • Conduct regular audits to verify compliance with statutory requirements and address any discrepancies promptly.
  • Monitor and manage the ADM payroll governance model following the Global Payroll Office standards and recommendations.
  • Evaluate vendor performance, support contracts negotiations, and establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to drive continuous improvement; monitor vendor compliance ensuring data security and confidentiality standards;
  • Develop and implement robust risk management processes to identify and mitigate potential payroll-related risks as well as Conduct risk assessments and implement controls to minimize errors, fraud, and other risks.
  • Establish and maintain contingency plans to ensure business continuity in the event of payroll disruptions.
  • Track KPIs and proactively identify opportunities for process improvements in payroll administration.

  • Bachelor’s degree in HR, Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 5 + years of experience in proven experience in payroll administration, with a focus on governance, vendor management, risk controls, and continuous improvement
  • Advanced knowledge of payroll regulations and tax and employment laws in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa.
  • Fluent English.
  • Knowledge of ERP is an advantage (preferably SAP HR and Success Factors).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and address potential risks.
  • Integrity, excellent communication, and interpersonal skills to liaise with internal teams and external vendors.
  • Previous experience in managing payroll vendors is nice to have.
  • Strong competencies in communication, teamwork, interpersonal effectiveness
  • Willingness to travel to the countries in scope of responsibilities (up to 30%)
