Job Vacancy: Job title: Deputy Team Leader, Nigeria

Job description: Under the USAID Inclusive Development Activity for Mission Support, Making Cents International is recruiting a Deputy Team Leader to support a co-creation process and inclusive development analysis (IDA) in Nigeria. This activity will help USAID/Nigeria identify macro- and sector-level social inequalities and barriers that impede marginalized and underserved groups from accessing basic services, thus supporting USAID/Nigeria to pursue locally informed approaches that address the specific needs of these groups.

The co-creation phase will first help USAID/Nigeria to design a technical assistance mechanism and to finalize the scope for the IDA. The IDA will then support USAID/Nigeria with identifying gaps in their existing activities and developing a roadmap for improving inclusiveness and equity across its portfolio and in its forthcoming country strategy.

Role and Tasks

Working closely with the Nigeria assessment team comprised of a researcher, logistician, and subject matter experts, the Deputy Team Leader will first assist with the planning and implementation of co-creation events, which includes a January 2024 in-person workshop with external stakeholders. Following co-creation, the Deputy Team Lead will help lead IDA activities, including assessment team training, data collection, analysis, and reporting.

  • Review materials developed to date, including scope of work, draft event agenda, meeting notes, and logistics materials
  • Schedule and participate in regular check-in meetings
  • Provide input to the co-creation work plan, including agendas, data collection instruments, and schedules
  • Support the organization and facilitation of co-creation meetings and workshop
  • Contribute to drafting the SOW for the Mission’s anticipated procurement
  • Contribute to the IDA workplan and schedule including the sampling plan, data collection instruments, data management approach, and team training
  • Contribute to the desk review, including the summary of findings and the identification of areas that require further research
  • In close coordination with the Team Leader, manage the research team during assessment activities to ensure data collection and analysis is timely, accurate, complete, and coordinated
  • Lead interviews with stakeholders and key informants and oversee focus groups
  • Guide team in conducting analysis and compiling findings
  • Support the preparation of a USAID Mission-wide presentation based on the preliminary findings from data collection activities and draft recommendations
  • In collaboration with the assessment team, draft the IDA report
  • Contribute to in-briefing and out-briefing meetings, initial findings presentation, and other engagement activities with USAID
  • Review, revise, and finalize the IDA report based on feedback received from USAID and in accordance with established deadlines
  • Contribute to the development of sector-specific resources and tools

Required Qualifications:

  • Based in Nigeria and able to travel to various locations throughout the country
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field and 8 years of experience; OR Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field and 14 years of experience
  • At least 10 years of experience in inclusive development, field research methodologies, and cross-sectoral assessments
  • Demonstrated experience with facilitation for similar workshops or events
  • Prior experience leading assessment or evaluation teams, leading data collection activities, and conducting high-quality qualitative and quantitative analysis, and writing
  • Experience using participatory and inclusive methodologies, including with one or more historically marginalized or under-represented groups
  • Experience in one or more of the relevant sectors: Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance, Economic Growth, Education, Health, Humanitarian Response, Climate Resilience, and/or Gender, Youth Development
  • Exemplary communication skills, both verbal and written English, and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working proficiency in one or more widely recognized languages in Nigeria
  • Experience providing mentorship and coaching to team members

Proposed Level of Effort and Work Schedule:

Estimated maximum Level of Effort will be 37 days between November 2023 – June 2024 (5 days for co-creation activities, 30 days for the IDA, and 2 additional days for other requests).
