The 30-year-old returned to Manchester United at the start of last season after an impressive stint on loan at West Ham and looking ready to produce a good campaign to come.
However, neither Solskjaer nor Rangnick placed any faith in him, with the England international starting just two Premier League matches all season, despite the Red Devils struggling for form under both bosses.
Lingard then left Old Trafford when his contract expired earlier this year and has since signed for Nottingham Forest, returning to take on United on Tuesday night in the Premier League.
It has not been the best start to life at the City Ground, with Lingard still to score his first league goal for his new club, but he expects it to be a memorable affair at Old Trafford.
Emotions will be running high and he is clearly still not happy with how his career at the club came to an end, saying he has still not been told why he wasn’t been called upon last season.
‘I don’t know what the problem was, whether it was politics or whatever,’ Lingard told The Telegraph. ‘I still haven’t got an answer to this day. I didn’t even ask.
‘I’d rather that someone out of respect for me being there that long told me, “This is why you’re not playing”, but I never got that. It was false promises.
‘I was training hard and I was sharp, I was ready to play…When you’re working hard in training and don’t play at the end of it, it’s very frustrating.
‘So this is a chance to say my goodbyes because I never really got that. It will be an enjoyable occasion but we want to win the game. You can’t get caught up too much in it emotionally.’
