Jamie Carragher has warned the Premier League’s top four hopefuls to be wary of an Arsena side who could challenge for Champions League qualification.

The Gunners started the season with three consecutive Premier League defeats against Brentford, Chelsea and Manchester City but have since gone four matches unbeaten, including an emphatic 3-1 win over north London rivals Tottenham.

Mikel Arteta’s side, who currently sit in 11th place after seven top flight games, will be hoping to better their disappointing eighth placed finish in the Spaniard’s first full season in charge last term.

While Carragher thinks that Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United are the favourites to make the top four this term, he has urged people not to write off the north London club.

‘We can already see which are the top four strongest Premier League teams,’ the former Liverpool defender told the Telegraph.

‘West Ham have had a good start, as have Brighton and Everton, but over the course of 38 games I am sure both clubs would take a Europa League place if it was offered right now.

‘The team that I think is worth watching closely as the season evolves is Arsenal.

‘If they can get the consistency into their young side, the lack of European football can be a massive help for Mikel Arteta as he spends more time with his players on the training ground.

‘I think it is too soon for them to qualify for the Champions League, but of the chasing pack they may prove themselves best equipped to challenge.’

Arsenal will be looking to continue their fine run of form when they play host to Crystal Palace on October 18, following the end of the two-week international break.
