Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has encouraged Manchester United to appoint Michael Carrick as manager on a permanent basis, mocking Rio Ferdinand’s memorable ‘Ole’s at the wheel’ outburst.

Carrick is the caretaker boss of United after Solskjaer was sacked on Sunday and got his short-term stint off to the perfect start with a 2-0 win at Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

There is no expectation that Carrick will be in charge of the Red Devils for the long-term, but there was also no thought that Solskjaer would be there for three years when he took over from Jose Mourinho.

When United famously knocked Paris Saint-Germain out of the Champions League in March 2019, Ferdinand famously said: ‘Listen, what they’ve got to do…

‘Man Utd might not thank me, but get the contract out, put it on the table, let him sign it, let him write whatever numbers he wants to put on there, given what he’s done since he’s come in.

‘Let him sign the contract. Ole’s at the wheel, man. Man United are back!’

Manchester United were not back and Solskjaer has now been dismissed, but Carragher was quick to remind Ferdinand of what he said two years ago on Tuesday evening.

The former Liverpool man tweeted: ‘Man Utd might not thank me, but get the contract out put it on the table & let him sign it, let him right whatever numbers he wants, let him sign the contract. Carrick’s at the wheel man!

Despite the mockery from Carragher, it was a good start for Carrick and United’s hunt for a new manager continues, although whether an interim or permanent boss will be next is not clear.

Former Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has been contacted over the interim post, while the Red Devils continue to want PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino, although they may have to wait until the end of the season to get their man.
