An irate Port Vale fan chased referee Craig Hicks off the pitch after he awarded a late penalty against his side.

Portsmouth were awarded a late penalty in Saturday’s League One clash at Vale Park with Colby Bishop stepping up to score and seal a 1-0 victory.

One home supporter was left livid with the decision, storming the pitch and charging straight towards the match official.

Spotting the pitch invader, Hicks ran off the pitch where he was protected by members of the Port Vale staff.

Port Vale boss and coach David Dunn were seen restraining the fan.

Port Vale later released a statement on social media condemning the actions of the fan.

It read: ‘Port Vale Football Club condemn the actions of the individual who entered the field of play during today’s match against Portsmouth.

‘We will work with the relevant authorities to ensure the matter and the individual is dealt with a zero tolerance approach.

‘We remind all supporters that entering the field of play is a criminal offence.’

Reflecting on the incident, Portsmouth boss John Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent. ‘I have never seen anything like that, it was a really unsavoury incident.

I’m glad Craig spotted it and got out of the way. It’s obviously something you don’t want to see.

‘But as a I spent more time in football you think you have seen everything but I haven’t seen that.’
