The Inter-Party Advisory Council on Wednesday called on the 10th National Assembly to prioritise national interest in the election of their principal officers in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The organisation, which announced plans to examine the outcome of the 2023 general elections after May 29, said it would reconstitute the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee in line with the provisions of its Code of Conduct, to further deepen harmony and comradeship among the political class.
The national chairman of IPAC, Yabagi Sani, stated these during its General Assembly in Abuja.
According to him, the lawmakers should “consider the current political realities in Nigeria, especially the need to balance representation in a way that reflects the diversity of Nigeria.”
While highlighting some recent strategic interventions made, he said IPAC has intervened and admonished the 10th National Assembly “to put Nigeria first in the forthcoming election of their principal officers in both the Senate and the House of Representatives bearing in mind our current political realities as regards the need to balance representation amongst religion, region and ethnicity.”
Sani also emphasised that the National Assembly must prioritise the interest of Nigeria over personal and party interests, adding that the IPAC would closely monitor the election process.
He said IPAC was planning to conduct a post-mortem of the 2023 polls to assess the performance of political parties and their candidates.
“With no prejudice to pending petitions at the tribunals, the council is planning to carry out a post-mortem of the 2023 General elections as from May 29, 2023, when the process would have reached its logical conclusion”, he added.
The IPAC national chairman further disclosed that the organisation plans to conduct a Peer Review Mechanism to assess the performance of state governors in the states and National Assembly legislatures’ effectiveness in law-making towards the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals.
He said, “The General Assembly may wish to be informed that in order to further deepen harmony and comradeship amongst the political class the Council is reconstituting the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee in line with the provisions of the IPAC Code of Conduct.
“This is to enable the political class to employ necessary in-house mechanisms to solve issues of disagreements amicably using political solutions.
“This will not only enhance the stability of the polity but checkmate the onslaught of misguided politicians, who are destabilising the polity for their narrow selfish interest.
“Also, ADRC will among other things reduce or eliminate the high cost of litigation and enmity on both sides.
“The General Assembly may also wish to be informed that, with no prejudice to pending petitions at the tribunals, the council is planning to carry out a post-mortem of the 2023 general elections as from May 29, 2023, when the process would have reached its logical conclusion.
“A concept note to that effect has been prepared and will soon be forwarded to you for your participation.
“It is our belief that the recommendations of the roundtable and other similar future engagements will go a long way in shaping future legislation and policies that will promote credible, free, fair and peaceful elections.”
