The Chairman of Audit Committee Institute, Chris Ekeigwe, has called on the audit technology professionals in Nigeria to immediately review their security protocols.
Ekeigwe, in a statement made available to The PUNCH on Friday, said this would forestall what he described as imminent data robbery.
According to the IT expert, computer security auditors needed to be reminded that the economics of computer crime is compelling, thereby making criminals to be incentivised to try.
He said, “It is important that IT audit consultants invest in novel prospective security technologies and enhance staff behaviour and operating procedures to ensure that client data are not put at risk. Society relies on our expertise and we must fulfil our public interest duty with professionalism.”
Ekeigwe also called for increased cooperative interaction between the police and the accounting and auditing profession to enable the police to understand the challenges that technology auditors face.
“The cooperation would be beneficial if accountants and auditors organize joint training on information security audit awareness for the police and auditors. It will also yield the collective efficacy needed to protect our community.
“There is a lot that the police can teach auditors about security and vice versa. Therefore, we need to embark on a co-learning strategy now.”
