In a development that has triggered widespread public concern, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has summoned officers from the 1 Police Mobile Force (MOPOL), Kaduna, after a viral video captured them allegedly receiving cash handouts from Chinese nationals.
The officers, reportedly led by DSP Aliyu Adejembi, were said to be on special assignment with the Chinese individuals in Lagos when the incident occurred. The viral footage shows several officers visibly lining up to collect money from the foreigners—a scene that has ignited a storm of criticism over professionalism and ethics in the Nigerian Police Force.
A wireless signal from the Force Headquarters dated April 15, 2025, confirmed that the IGP has directed the Provost of 1 PMF Kaduna and the officers involved to report to the Force Headquarters for an inquiry.
The message, filled with urgency, reads in part: “Order and directives. Professional misconduct x discreditable conduct x eye respectfully convey INGENPOL directive…to come along with DSP Aliyu Adejembi X and team X… on Wednesday 16/04/2025 X at 0900HRS… treat as very important please.”
The incident has once again cast a spotlight on the recurring challenges of accountability within the police force. Critics argue that while internal disciplinary procedures are commendable, the Nigerian public expects visible outcomes that go beyond mere summoning of errant officers.
Human rights advocates and civil society groups have called for an independent review of the incident to determine if the officers’ actions constituted bribery, extortion, or a violation of police operational procedures.
As of press time, neither the Nigeria Police Force nor the Chinese embassy had issued further details regarding the origin or purpose of the cash gifts.
Newspot Nigeria will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as new developments emerge.
