Osogbo, Osun – Five months after Governor Ademola Adeleke’s controversial directive to ban heavy-duty trucks and articulated vehicles from the iconic Olaiya flyover in Osogbo, recent evidence shows the flyover remains in excellent condition with no signs of the alleged structural deterioration.
In October 2024, the state government under Governor Adeleke issued a ban preventing motorists with heavy-duty trucks and owners of articulated vehicles from using the flyover. The move, justified by safety concerns and based on technical reports submitted to the governor, was purportedly made following a State Security Council resolution. In a statement by his spokesperson, Rasheed Olawale, Governor Adeleke claimed that several public interest engineers and national leaders in the construction industry had recommended an integrity test for the flyover, further underscoring the urgency for protective measures.

However, recent photographs and video footage taken on the ground have confirmed that the Olaiya flyover is structurally sound and remains fully operational. Critics argue that the ban was less about genuine public safety concerns and more about political vendetta. They claim that while the current administration swiftly erected substandard bars on the flyover for political leverage, it has failed to maintain the flyover’s aesthetics and associated public amenities—assets built with taxpayer funds during the previous administration.
Observers have noted that the directive, which was intended to protect public assets, appears to have been misused as a political tool. With billions of naira allocated to various incomplete road projects in the state—including the Okefia and Lameco flyovers, among others—questions are being raised about the current administration’s commitment to maintaining infrastructure. Critics contend that while the government focuses on making unfounded claims about the flyover’s condition, it is neglecting its constitutional duty to preserve these vital assets.
As the debate rages on, the people of Osun remain vigilant, documenting the administration’s every move and questioning the true motives behind the safety directive. The public awaits decisive action from Governor Adeleke’s government to retrace its steps and ensure that political ambitions do not come at the expense of public infrastructure and safety.
