Arsenal legends Ian Wright and Patrick Vieira were reduced to laughter after watching Joao Felix’s nightmare Chelsea debut unfold on the Thursday night.
The Portugal international was thrust into immediate action by Graham Potter after arriving from Atletico Madrid on a six-month loan just 24 hours earlier.
Chelsea have paid close to £10million to sign the Portugal international until the end of the season, but Felix will miss the next three games through suspension after his Blues bow ended in almost farcical circumstances.
Felix had delivered a polished performance up until his 58th minute challenge on Kenny Tete which left referee David Coote with no option but to give Chelsea’s new signing his marching orders.
Speaking on his Wrighty’s House podcast, Wright revealed he watched the game, which saw Fulham record their first victory in a west London derby since 2006, with his former Arsenal teammate Patrick Vieira.
And the Frenchman, preparing his Crystal Palace team to face Chelsea on Sunday, could hardly believe what he was seeing as a dejected Felix trudged towards the dressing room contemplating the consequences of his ill-judged tackle.
Wright said: ‘I’ve got to tell you last night I was at Patrick Vieira’s. Me and Patrick were watching the game together.
‘Joao Felix we were waxing about how well he’s playing in his first game. And when he got sent-off, Patrick just got up and went to the kitchen.
‘Patrick just got up and smiled at me and went to the kitchen.’
Felix will be powerless to help his new teammates at Selhurst Park, much to the frustration of Potter who has presided over a miserable run of just two wins in 10 games which has left his side languishing in mid-table.
‘Of course, we’re disappointed because he came here to play, he came on loan to play. You saw his quality when he was on the pitch [against Fulham],’ he said.
‘To lose him for three games is a real blow for us but there’s nothing we can do. We just have to deal with it.’
