Pep Guardiola’s champions were stunned 2-1 by the Bees in the early kick-off – losing their second top-flight game of the season – before Arsenal won 2-0 at Wolves later that day to go five points clear at the top of the Premier League.
It is a massive boost for the Gunners with the season now on hold for the World Cup in Qatar, which starts on Sunday, as the Premier League resumes on December 26 as Mikel Arteta’s side host struggling West Ham at the Emirates.
Former Arsenal striker Wright told the Kelly and Wrighty Show that the squad were watching City’s defeat to Brentford on the team coach and were ‘cheering’.
‘When you see City lose against Brentford, which nobody saw coming, for Arsenal to watch that… I heard they were watching it on the coach and cheering,’ he said.
‘That’s how everybody would have reacted involved with Arsenal. Now you have to go there [Wolves] and you can’t lose.
‘That is what I was more impressed with than anything else.’
Arsenal have not won the Premier League since 2003-04 but their strong start has fans dreaming of glory and some pundits are predicting them to go all the way.
‘If the bulk of Arsenal’s XI can stay fit, from Gabriel Jesus to Oleksandr Zinchenko to Martin Odegaard, then why can’t they compete with Manchester City for the title?’ Chris Sutton told the Daily Mail following Arsenal’s win at Wolves.
‘City have made mistakes and Arsenal are capitalising. [But] Mikel Arteta will downplay their chances.
‘He will not want to pile any pressure on his players. But all of football is looking at Arsenal now as title contenders.’
