Premier League players always try and stay out of trouble with the referee – but in the heat of the moment they can step out of line.

And if the offence is deemed serious enough, players can be given their marching orders and sent for an early bath.

So, how many games do players miss for a red card in the Premier League?

We take a look at the red card rules in the competition.

How many games is a player suspended for in the Premier League?

If a player is sent off for a professional foul, such as denying a goal scoring opportunity, they will be handed a one match ban.

Likewise, a second bookable offence will result in a player being banned for one game.

Straight red cards handed out for dissent will lead to a two match suspension, whilst violent conduct and dangerous play will result in a three match suspension.

The punishment for violent conduct and dangerous play can also be increased to four games or more, depending on the severity of the incident, although this is rare.

A player dismissed for spitting will automatically be banned for six games.

The most serious offences, such as racism and other discriminatory behaviour, are open to larger penalties.

Players can be banned for an additional game if they do not leave the pitch within a reasonable time following the issuing of the red card.

Can red cards be appealed?

Clubs are able to launch an appeal against straight red cards if they believe it to be unjust.

The appeal is lodged with the FA, and the case is heard before a panel of experts, who have the power to reverse the referee’s decision and annul the red card.

However, if the FA consider a club’s submission to be a ‘frivolous’ appeal, a three game ban can be increased by one match.

Appeals cannot be made against a second yellow card, except in the case of mistaken identity.

Are red cards carried over from the FA Cup and Carabao Cup?

If a player is shown a red card in either the FA Cup or Carabao Cup, their suspension will carry over to their team’s next fixtures – including Premier League games.

Similarly, if a player is sent off in the Premier League, the suspension will apply to the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

This is unlike yellow cards, which do not carry over between the Premier League and the cup competitions.
