The Italian returned to Chelsea, his parent club, after the Blues cut short a season-long loan spell at the Foxes.
While a break clause in the deal meant Chelsea were well within their rights to recall Casadei, Leicester were caught cold by the decision.
The former Inter Milan midfielder had made 25 appearances for the Foxes this term, scoring three goals.
Leicester were more than happy to have the 21-year-old but most of all, Chelsea had been delighted with his progress and development on loan.
But, with Enzo Fernandez carrying a hernia problem, the Blues felt obliged to recall Casadei.
And Maresca admits the decision caught Leicester by surprise.
‘We were surprised Casadei went back to Chelsea,’ said Maresca.
‘They own him so they can decide – we can’t do anything. We didn’t expect it but we deal with it and we see if we can do something before the transfer window closes.’
Mauricio Pochettino now plans to integrate the Italian in his first-team squad for the remainder of the season, before making a decision on his short-term future in the summer.
Casadei has gone straight into the squad for Tuesday night’s EFL semi-final second leg clash against Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge.
