The Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu, V, has called on the federal government to hire many contractors to handle the Calabar-Lagos highway project to enable swift completion.

The Obong of Calabar Executive Forum, OCEF, an advisory and executive arm of the Palace of the Obong, addressed a media conference on behalf of the Obong.

They called on the federal government to start the construction of the Calabar-Lagos highway simultaneously, saying it would abridge the project delivery time.

According to the Forum, many contractors commencing the job simultaneously will help to reduce risks associated with inflation.

The forum advised the federal government to engage many engineers and competent road construction contractors for the project.

“If the project commences from the Lagos and Calabar axis simultaneously and is awarded to several competent contractors, with close supervision and monitoring by the minister of works and his team, the project would be delivered during the life of the Tinubu administration.”

They commended the Tinubu administration, describing the project as the single largest-ever infrastructure development in Nigeria.

According to Chairman of the OCEF, Gershom Henshaw, MFR the coastal highway is a strategic national infrastructure that will transform the economic landscape of the nine states which the road project will traverse.

They also reminded the government to complete the Adiabo bridge which was started by the late General Sani Abacha’s government to connect the state up to Akwa Ibom State, saying the project has reached over 70 percent completion and should not be forgotten.

Similarly, they reminded the government about the East-West road, saying it will massively impact South-South and Southeastern states.
