Harry Maguire’s proposed move from Manchester United to West Ham has collapsed and it now looks like he may stay at Old Trafford beyong the current transfer window.

The Red Devils accepted a £30m bid from the Hammers for the 30-year-old after the England defender fell a long way down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

It looked like Maguire was going to head to east London to get more regular first team football and keep his hopes alive of playing for the Three Lions at the European Championships next year.

However, The Athletic report that the move is not going to happen, stating that personal terms were never agreed between West Ham and the centre-back and he didn’t even talk to Hammers manager David Moyes.

Maguire sat on the bench as Manchester United beat Wolves 1-0 in their opening Premier League match of the season on Monday night, with first choice pairing of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez in the middle of defence.

Martinez was taken off at half-time due to a minor injury and replaced by Victor Lindelof, confirming that Maguire is at best fourth choice at centre-back, but was even behind Luke Shaw in the pecking order at times last season as well.

United are keen to get rid of him and fund a move for another defender, namely Bayern Munich’s versatile World Cup-winning star Benjamin Pavard, but the collapse of the West Ham deal puts a spanner in those works.

Speaking before the win over Wolves, Ten Hag said of Maguire: ‘He has to fight for his place. He has the ability to be first choice centre-back, he is the best for England so why shouldn’t he be the best for us — he has to prove it.

‘When he is not confident enough to fight then he has to make a decision and go.’
