Manchester United defender Harry Maguire dedicated the side’s win against Brentford to the ‘Ferguson family’ after the death of Lady Cathy Ferguson.

The 84-year-old passed away on Thursday. She had three sons with Sir Alex, following 57 years of marriage.

Cathy famously convinced Sir Alex not to retire in 2002, with Ferguson managing United for a further 11 years before his retirement in 2013.

His eventual retirement was because Cathy had lost her sister in the early months of the 2012/13 campaign, and Ferguson said it was his duty to be with her.

Sir Alex was not present as United scored twice in three minutes to beat Brentford at the Theatre of Dreams on Saturday.

It was a fitting tribute to the Scot, given his teams’ affinity for late goals.

And Maguire, who provided the assist for the winner, says the victory was for the Ferguson family.

‘This was for the Ferguson family….’Fergie time’, said Maguire.

‘Thinking of you boss and your family.

‘Rest in peace Cathy.’
