Arsenal hero Paul Merson reckons Tottenham will finish in the bottom half of the Premier League table if Harry Kane leaves for Bayern Munich before the end of the transfer window.
After prolonged negotiations and rejected bids, the German giants have come to an agreement with Spurs over a fee for the England captain.
The deal is not yet done as the final decision will lie in the hands of Kane who is yet to agree to the switch to the Bundesliga.
Clearly losing their star player would be a huge loss for Tottenham and their new manager Ange Postecoglou, with Merson believing it would see them slide down into the bottom half of the table.
‘Kane scored 30 goals last season and Spurs finished nowhere near,’ Merson told Sky Sports. ‘You feel sorry for Ange Postecoglou, but you’re talking about a team who might, might, get in the top four if he stays, then a team who doesn’t get in the top half if he leaves.
‘They’re 100 per cent a bottom half team if he leaves. Who is going to get the goals? They finished eighth last season. I like James Maddison, he’s a good player. But Leicester got relegated.’
The Athletic confirmed on Thursday morning that Bayern and Spurs have reached an agreement on a deal worth more than €100million (£86.3m) after two failed bids.
Kane is yet to make a decision on his future, with reports suggesting that he was leaning towards staying at Spurs, but now he has a huge call to make.
