The decision to release the multiplayer for Halo Infinite ahead of the game itself has already paid off according to the latest Steam stats.

Microsoft don’t like you to know how popular anything to do with Xbox is. They won’t release console sales figures, or subscriber numbers for Game Pass, or any indication of how any of their individual games are doing.

The industry in general isn’t much better, which makes it very hard to tell how anything is doing. Unless when it’s on PC, because then you can just look at the Steam stats.

The free multiplayer launch for Halo Infinite was announced at around 7.30pm on Monday and by 2am in the morning (evening time in the US) it had had a peak of 272,586 people playing the game on PC.

How many more were playing it on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S is impossible to tell but it’ll likely to be at least the same number, given the download is completely free.

The only Steam games that were more popular on Monday were evergreens Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, and PUBG – making it the fourth most popular game of the day and ahead of the likes of Apex Legends, GTA 5, and Forza Horizon 5.

You can see the figures yourself at the Steam Database and while they dipped considerably as soon as America went to bed the game is likely to continue to do well for the foreseeable future.

Halo Infinite itself isn’t due to be released until December 8 but this will all be encouraging news for Microsoft, given the troubled development of the game and its importance in terms of reviving the Halo franchise.

The recent Forza Horizon 5 has already become the biggest launch in Xbox history and if Halo Infinite is able to snatch that accolade away from it then Microsoft will be enjoying a very merry Christmas indeed.
