A group under the aegis of Oron National Forum, ONAF, has tackled the 59 northern members of the House of Representatives over the proposed bill seeking to eliminate Section 162, subsection 2, of the 1999 constitution as amended, which deals with the principle of derivation.
The group, in a statement, tagged, ”ONAF rejects alleged Constitution alteration,” which was signed by its National President and National Secretary, Comrade Ita Ante and Comrade Etifit Nkereuwem respectively described the federal lawmakers’ action as ‘provocative, unpatriotic and insensitive’ targeted towards destabilization of the country.
According to the statement made available to newsmen on Sunday, the group said: “The attention of Oron National Forum(ONAF), has been drawn to media reports with utter disbelief and reservation the alleged plot by the 59 Northern members of House of Representatives to unlawfully and illegally alter section 162, subsection 2, of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) which deals with derivation principle.
“ONAF strongly frown at this insensitive and provocative act by some of our unpatriotic and selfish politicians, whose interest is to cause discord and chaos in the country.
“The forum wholeheartedly aligns with other democratic and progressive organisations across the Country to vehemently reject, and oppose this unholy attempt to carry out amendment of that section of the constitution to the detriment of the South-South people.
“ONAF shall in collaboration with Niger Delta leaders, Governors, traditional rulers among others, defend our territory, resources, and fundamental rights in the constitution and United Nations declaration on human rights.
“It is quite worrisome that Lawmakers who should have worked in accordance with our constitution, are the ones acting in breach of the provisions of the Constitution.”
The group, therefore, called on President Muhammadu Buhari and all well-meaning people in Nigeria to reject and jettison the proposed bill in the interest of peace, democracy, justice, and equity.
