Mikel Arteta admits he is ‘pretty worried’ about Granit Xhaka after the midfielder limped out of Arsenal’s impressive 3-1 win in the north London derby against Tottenham on Sunday.

The Gunners were in fine form at the Emirates, romping into a 3-0 lead after just 34 minutes thanks to goals from Emile Smith Rowe, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bukayo Saka.

It was nearly the perfect day for Arteta and his side, but Son Heung-min wiped out their clean sheet in 79th minute and Xhaka was injured moments later.

The Swiss midfielder was hurt as Spurs forward Lucas Moura fell into him, with the exact nature of the problem unclear, but with his leg planted as the collision occurred, there are concerns that it could be ligament damage.

Arteta certainly suggested that it could be a serious injury for the 28-year-old, although, as ever, they will have to wait for further checks to find out the full extent of the problem.

‘Unfortunately he got injury and I’m pretty worried because it doesn’t look very positive at the moment,’ said Arteta of his midfield general.

Xhaka was retuning to the starting XI after suspension and turned in a fantastic performance alongside Thomas Partey in the middle of midfield.

They provided the ideal base for the three goal scorers and Martin Odegaard to play freely ahead of them and rip Spurs to shreds at times in the first half.

Arteta was delighted at the mix between the senior players and youthful forward on show at the Emirates.

‘It was probably the exact mix that we need, the seniors players stepped in and dominated the game,’ Arteta told Sky Sports.

‘The leadership of Granit, of Thomas, the senior players. Then the youth, that is full of enthusiasm, life and good energy.’
