Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has received the prestigious Award of Excellence for his remarkable contributions to circular economy, waste management, and environmental sustainability. The award was presented at the International Waste Management Conference, Exhibition, and Awards, hosted by the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAMN) on February 20th and 21st at the Lagos Continental Hotel, Victoria Island.

The conference, themed “Redefining Integrated Waste Management in Nigeria through Circular Economy,” featured a goodwill message from Governor Adeleke, delivered by Professor Chinwe Obuaku, a Consultant on Climate Change and Renewable Energy. Professor Obuaku also participated in a panel discussion focused on sustainable waste management strategies and financing mechanisms.

In his message, Governor Adeleke reaffirmed Osun State’s commitment to integrating circular economy principles into its waste management practices. He highlighted the potential benefits of these principles in driving economic development, enhancing environmental resilience, and addressing climate change. The Governor elaborated on ongoing initiatives aimed at transforming waste into valuable resources, creating job opportunities, and mitigating environmental degradation.

“Waste should not be seen as an end product but as an economic resource,” Governor Adeleke emphasized, noting that Osun State is investing in various innovative projects, including recycling hubs, organic waste composting for agriculture, and bioenergy production. These efforts align with the state’s broader sustainability agenda while contributing to Nigeria’s climate mitigation strategies.

Additionally, the Governor pointed out the significance of carbon credits and green bonds as financial tools to support scalable waste management projects. “The global transition to a low-carbon economy opens up opportunities for subnational governments to leverage carbon finance. By engaging with carbon credit markets and green bonds, Osun State can enhance its waste management infrastructure while generating revenue for climate-smart investments,” he stated.

During the panel discussion, Professor Obuaku emphasized Osun State’s open-door policy for partnerships in the waste management and climate sectors. “Achieving a sustainable circular economy necessitates collaboration among multiple stakeholders. Osun State actively seeks private sector investment, research partnerships, and technical support to bolster our waste-to-wealth initiatives and expand green infrastructure,” she declared.

She further reiterated that Osun State’s circular economy agenda is closely linked to its climate action strategy, highlighting the importance of integrating waste management with broader environmental policies. “From innovative recycling projects to sustainable packaging solutions, Osun State is committed to pioneering new models of environmental sustainability that align with global best practices,” she added.

Governor Adeleke’s Award of Excellence stands as a testament to Osun State’s leadership in sustainable waste management and climate resilience. The state continues to lead in subnational climate governance, implementing policies that connect waste management with green growth, carbon reduction, and environmental protection.

As Osun advances its circular economy agenda, the government invites technical, financial, and institutional partnerships to further enhance its waste-to-wealth programs, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient Nigeria.
