In a significant move to address the ongoing local government leadership crisis in Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke convened a special briefing with the Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers. The meeting, chaired by His Imperial Majesty, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, aimed to discuss the current situation regarding the sacked Yes/No council chairmen and associated court rulings.

During the briefing, Governor Adeleke provided a comprehensive situation report, emphasizing that no court order has reinstated the dismissed chairmen, and reaffirming that the court’s ruling remains valid and enforceable. He expressed gratitude for the statesmanship and divine intervention that have thus far prevented a potential crisis within the state’s democratic framework.

The governor recalled the controversial Yes/No local government election organized by former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, which took place shortly after the 2022 gubernatorial election. This election faced legal challenges from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APP) due to violations of the Electoral Act. A Federal High Court subsequently declared the election null and void, ordering the removal of the elected officials.

Governor Adeleke further noted that while both the APC and APP appealed the court’s decisions, the latter abandoned its appeal, resulting in its dismissal. In the PDP’s appeal, the Appeal Court favored the APC on two of the four issues raised, labeling the remaining two as academic exercises. The court did not issue any orders that would reinstate the previously removed chairmen, reinforcing the legitimacy of the ongoing legal proceedings.

As the situation continues to evolve, Governor Adeleke’s commitment to upholding the law and ensuring a stable political environment in Osun State remains unwavering.
