Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has defended his frequent absence from the state in recent times.
He has also threatened to sanction commissioners and key aides who abandon their offices or continue to be absent from state events once the governor is away.
Citizens of the state had recently observed the Governor’s frequent travels, leading to public commentaries.
However, in his defence, the Governor told his cabinet that his travels were to attract more international investments into the state.
A resolution of the 11th council meeting signed by Erasmus Ekpang, Commissioner for Information, said the governor’s “regular interactions outside the state are part of his administration’s deliberate policy to attract more investments and businesses capable of advancing the State’s economy for the overall benefit of the citizenry.”
The resolution assured that the initiatives would be evident in the state, noting that the state will soon be economically more viable and stable.
Otu reminded the commissioners and other aides of his earlier directive to embrace the culture of attending government events and engagements, regardless of whether he or his Deputy was present.
He warned them never to undermine his leadership’s resolve, saying he would no longer tolerate indolence.
He directed all Commissioners to submit a comprehensive achievement of their respective Ministries, Departments and Agencies to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government for further necessary appraisal within one week.
