The Taraba Governor, Agbu Kefas has announced the approval of N500 million naira to kick start the payment of pensions to the state’s retirees.
The Governor made the announcement in Jalingo, saying the payment exercise will commence with immediate effect.
The move is coming a few days after the former state chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Jonah Kataps appealed to the governor to remember retired workers in the local government councils.
Before the announcement, only retired state government workers received their monthly pension and gratuity.
The approved fund which the governor said will be disbursed in monthly instalments of N100 million, is aimed at ensuring a consistent flow of payment, which he believes will clear all the backlog.
Some of the pensioners who spoke with our reporter said the payment, if consistent, as promised by the governor, will go a long way in providing the much-desired relief for them.
The governor’s gestures, in their words, offer hope for most retirees who have endured financial difficulties due to delayed payments.
Kefas’s proactive approach to resolving this issue, according to one of the pensioners who identified himself as Mallam Yusuf, underscores his commitment to the welfare of retired public servants.
“By allocating these funds, the governor acknowledges the invaluable contributions of pensioners during their years of service,” he said.
“As the payment process begins, all of us who are local government pensioners and our families can look forward to the financial support we have long been denied by the past administration.”
