Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has ordered the procurement of 500,000 tree seedlings for planting to mitigate the effects of climate change.

This comes barely a month after the governor announced the revival of a law against tree felling in response to rampant flooding and other effects of deforestation.

Speaking on the decision for the planting of 500,000 tree seedlings across the state, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Cletus Hilkiah Gwotyel, said the governor mandated the ministry procure the seedlings for planting to check deforestation.

The permanent secretary, while receiving the Adamawa State House of Assembly Standing Committee on Environment and Natural Resources Development on Friday, said that the ministry, with its four technical departments and seven directors, has what it needs in human capital to carry out its assignment.

On its part, the visiting House of Assembly committee said it is all out to tackle emerging issues around climate change in the state.

The chairman of the committee, Yohanna Jauro, who is the member representing Mubi South constituency, said indiscriminate cutting of trees in the past contributed significantly to climate change.

He said the menace requires definite remedial measures, such as the order to plant trees by the state governor.

One of the committee members, Paul Samuel from Mubi North constituency, said the committee would need support from the ministry for the development of the state.
