Governor Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has introduced a policy granting free university education to female students who achieve nine credits or more in their senior secondary school examinations.
This initiative fulfils a campaign promise aimed at promoting gender equality and combating social issues through education.
The governor made the announcement while meeting with parents of the first cohort of 21 students selected under this policy. He emphasised the correlation between education and reducing criminality, underscoring the importance of empowering young women through education.
Pledged during his reelection campaign in Jada Local Government Area, the policy initially targeted one female student from each of the state’s 21 Local Government Areas. However, Governor Fintiri expanded the initiative to include all qualified female students across the state.
“This is now a continuous programme,” Governor Fintiri declared. “Any female student with nine credits and above, regardless of background or origin, will have the opportunity to attend a public university in Nigeria tuition-free.”
In addition to free university education, the governor outlined plans to integrate entrepreneurial and vocational skills into the secondary school curriculum as part of his administration’s broader human capital development strategy.
Governor Fintiri expressed pride in Adamawa State’s educational achievements, attributing the success to the government’s policy of covering examination fees for students. He highlighted that Adamawa State ranked second in the recent West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examinations, demonstrating the positive impact of educational investments.
The governor’s initiative aims not only to empower young women but also to prepare them as future leaders and contributors to society.
