About 850 officers have been deployed by Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Gombe State ahead of the gubernatorial and state assembly election scheduled for Saturday, March 19.

A statement from NSCDC Public Relations Officer, DSC Sa’ad Buhari, quoted the state Commandant, Achir Abraham, as giving the breakdown, while addressing Area Commanders and Divisional Officers at the Command’s Headquarters in Gombe.

Abraham charged the officers to maintain utmost professionalism, during and after conduct of the poll.

He noted that deployed officers were expected to contribute to the smooth process of the poll, adding that sanctions awaited those who defaulted.

Excerpts from the statement read: “The 850 officers of the Command are to uphold the ethics of professionalism and be apolitical in the conduct of the electoral process.”

“While assuring residents of Gombe State of adequate protection of lives and property, he equally tasked officers to work in synergy with all security agencies, towards ensuring a hitch-free and fair election in the state,” the spokesperson remarked.

He stressed: “We are to ensure adequate protection of lives and property, especially critical National Assets and infrastructure, during and after the exercise in collaboration with other security agencies,” Abraham added.

Our correspondent reports that out of the 12 political parties contesting the gubernatorial election in the state, eight on Monday, have endorsed Governor Muhammadu Yahaya as their candidate.

Five others, on Thursday, adopted AA candidate, Brigadier General Nuhu Miller; while Labour Party’s Keftin Amuga, New Nigeria Peoples’ Party’s Khamisu Mailantarki and Peoples’ Democratic Party’s Muhammad Barde are running the race solo, without being in any form of alliance.
