Following the minor shake-up by the Inspector General of Nigeria Police, Usman Baba, on Thursday. The Gombe State former Commissioner of Police, Ishola Babaita, has been moved to the staff college, Jos, while Oqua Etim now superintends the command.
According to a press statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer which was obtained by our Correspondent, Etim has become the 21st Commissioner of the state.
The statement partly read, “The Gombe State Police Command wishes to inform the members of the public especially the citizens of Gombe State, that new Commissioner of Police, CP Oqua Etim, has assumed duty as the 21st Commissioner of Police, Gombe State Command on November 11, 2022, after taking over from CP Ishola Babaita, who has been redeployed to Central Planning and Training Unit, Police Staff College, Jos.”
According to him, the Command has five area commands, 24 Divisions and other tactical units across the eleven Local Government Areas with the Headquarters at Gombe Local Government Area of the state.
“CP Oqua Etim was born on October 18, 1963 in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, but hails from Calabar Municipal Council of Cross River State. He was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Academy, Kaduna Annex on March, 3, 1990 as a member Cadet ASP course 16 and was commissioned into the Nigeria Police Force as an Assistant Superintendent of Police and deployed to Oyo State Police Command in 1991.
“In the course of his career, the CP has attended so many professional courses both home and abroad. These include the Junior and Senior Command Courses at Police Staff College Jos, United Nations Staff Officers Course at Addis Ababa Ethiopia (2005), Stability Policing Course sponsored by the Arab League at Mubarak Police Academy Cairo, Egypt (2008), the High Level Management Course at Centre of Excellence COESPU, Vicenza Italy (2008), Policy Leadership and Strategic Course at National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Kuru-Jos (2012), and Civil Military Course at National Defense College (NDC) (2016), Abuja among others,” the statement said.
While revealing the professional exploits of Etim, Mahid noted that the current Commissioner is a member of International Association of Chiefs of Police, happily married with children.
“The new Commissioner of Police however solicits the cooperation of members of the public in checkmating crime and criminality in the state and assures them of visible community and intelligence-led policing as he affirms his commitments to improving on what his predecessor has emplaced to secure the state,” the statement added.
