Tensions are escalating in the Moro community of Osun State as retired General Alani Akinrinade faces serious allegations of attempting to seize land belonging to Origbo Anglican Grammar School for personal use. Residents report that Akinrinade, a former Minister of Agriculture during Olusegun Obasanjo’s military regime, has allegedly deployed military personnel to intimidate locals and suppress opposition against his land acquisition efforts.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that Akinrinade, hailing from the neighboring Yakoyo community, has stationed military vans at strategic locations in Moro to deter any protests from the residents. “They have arranged mercenaries to fight for him,” an elderly resident disclosed, highlighting a growing concern over the retired general’s influence.
Sources within the community assert that this is not a new development but rather a continuation of Akinrinade’s longstanding history of land seizures dating back to the 1970s. “He has been grabbing lands from farmers and indigenous people,” noted one local, emphasizing that the land in question is currently utilized by artisans and a block industry, even though it is officially owned by the grammar school.
Conflicting narratives emerged when Akinrinade denied any intentions of land seizure, claiming he has no plans to take over the land and asserting that he lives in Moro. He suggested that the signage erected for a proposed multipurpose hall might have been done without his consent. “I have no interest in it,” he stated, attempting to distance himself from the allegations.
However, shortly after their conversation, Akinrinade admitted that he had learned individuals were attempting to acquire the land in his name, expressing concern that these actions could ignite unrest between the two communities involved.
As the situation unfolds, locals remain vigilant against what they perceive as an orchestrated move to usurp public property, fueled by Akinrinade’s military connections and political influence. The community fears that tensions could escalate into violence, particularly given the reported involvement of mercenaries and security operatives.
This ongoing saga raises critical questions about land rights, military influence in civil matters, and the protection of community interests against powerful individuals.
