Cristiano Ronaldo is the guaranteed goal-scorer that new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will want at the club, believes Gary Neville.

The 37-year-old netted his 23rd goal of the season on Thursday night when he struck in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford.

It has not been a great season in terms of results for the Red Devils, but it is hard to argue Ronaldo’s return wasn’t a good move, with the Portuguese superstar scoring 17 Premier League goals, eight more than anyone else in the squad.

Ronaldo has another year to run on his contract with the club, but there is some doubt over how incoming manager Erik ten Hag will want to use him, or if he will want the veteran around at all.

Neville is not sure how the Dutchman will deal with the prolific forward, but suggests that he will want a proven goal-scorer and Ronaldo is exactly that.

‘It will be really interesting with Erik ten Hag what happens at end of the season,’ Neville told Sky Sports.

‘He will want a goal-scorer, he wants someone who can put the ball in the back of he net 20 to 25 times, and he’s got that man.

‘Can United use Cristiano Ronaldo as a bridge to get them through Erik ten Hag’s first season? Cristiano Ronaldo is a phenomenon, he’s a global icon.’

It has been a really tough season for United, with the club set to end the campaign without any silverware and outside of the Champions League places.

However, Neville has nothing but praise for Ronaldo, who has emerged from the mess of a team with a lot of credit.

‘You can’t really speak highly enough of him,’ said the former United defender. ‘His goal tonight was wonderful. He doesn’t really lose that belief in himself when you can see that’s a team lacking in confidence completely, yet his is still there.

‘He’s still scored plenty of goals for united in a team that isn’t co-ordinated, hasn’t got a plan, but he’s a sensation, absolute sensation.’
