Gareth Southgate has refused to rule out the possibility of leading England into the next World Cup in 2026 but says his sole focus remains on this summer’s Euros

Southgate’s current contract runs out in December, which may well be seen as the logical time for a fresh pair of hands to oversee the national team.

The 53-year-old, however, would not get drawn into any promises about his future and insisted he would not make a decision until after the Euros, his fourth major tournament as England boss.

‘No. You’ve got to see how the summer goes – it’s as simple as that,’ Southgate responded when asked at England’s Nations League draw in Paris if he’d made a decision about his future.

‘There’s a fair chance half the coaches won’t be here after the Euros. That’s international football.’

‘In my view, I know what we’re capable of achieving in the summer. I know what my own benchmark of success would be. After that I’m not really thinking about anything else at the moment.

‘It’s always been exciting to take the team, whatever the strengths of the squad. In the end, we’ve got to deliver a performance and you’ve got to make the best decisions for everybody.

‘I won’t be in a position to make that decision before the tournament.’

In the aftermath of England’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to France in 2022, speculation had been rife that Southgate would depart.

Back then, the England boss took his time before making a decision to stay on and suggested he intended to do a similar thing after the Euros this summer in Germany.

‘If we did anything before, it would be detrimental to the performance in the summer, whichever way your decision went,’ he added.

‘I think while our focus is on the summer, from a personal perspective you’re fully invested in what happens in what happens and I think that’s how it should be.’

Having been relegated following a disappointing Nations League campaign last time, England are now in League B and have been drawn against the Republic of Ireland, Finland and Greece.
