The management of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO, has imposed a reparation fee of N20,000 on each of the 2012 /2022 graduates over alleged destruction of school property while celebrating their graduation from the various departments in the institution.
These are part of the decisions reached at the 495 meeting of the senate held on Thursday, August 31, 2023, which ordered that all 2021/2022 graduating students of the University be surcharged the sum of N20,000.00 only damages to University properties.
In a statement signed by the Registrar/Secretary to the Senate, Mr Chiadozie Uba, the school authority also imposed rustication for one academic session for the identified ring leaders/key players in the dastardly act.
The statement reads, “The Senate considered the submission from the Committee of Deans on the senseless celebration involving wanton destruction of University properties by graduating students and the above-reached decisions of the Senate are for necessary action, please.”
Newspot gathered that the development has created a tense atmosphere on campus, with students feeling that the management was too quick to punish them without considering the circumstances.
One of the 2012 /2022 graduates, who pleaded anonymity, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Hope Uzodinma to come to their rescue.
He said, “I am sure that none of us in this set did such. I remember that before the exams, there was a memo from the school banning the celebration of any such, and we obeyed.
“This memo is an indirect way of the school management trying to extort money from us.”
