The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, SSANU, at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, protested on Tuesday against the non-payment of their salary by the federal government.

Kicking against the situation, the workers disclosed that government has been owing them four months of salaries since 2022.

Protesters gathered at the main entrance of the institution, displaying placards with various inscriptions, such as “FG, we are hungry,” “No double standard; pay us our withered salaries,” “FG, stop victimising SSANU, non-teaching staff,” and “Pay living wage to workers as promised.”

According to Felix Adubi, the chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council, FUTA, the protesting unions could no longer guarantee industrial harmony over the situation.

Adubi, who maintained that only one union was paid out of the four unions that went on strike in 2022, stressed: “The divide and rule system of government is not acceptable to us.

“We are calling on Mr. President to make good on his promise. We are pleading with Mr. President to do the needful before the final straw. Mr. President has promised there will be no crisis in the Nigerian universities.”
