The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is commencing extensive inquiries into the governors and deputy governors who will soon lose their immunity from prosecution upon leaving office, according to credible sources speaking to Premium Times.
According to an internal memo, the EFCC’s investigation covers at least 28 governors and their deputies, as each of Nigeria’s 36 states is governed by a governor-deputy pair.
Out of the 28 governors, along with their deputies, who will undergo the EFCC’s scrutiny, 18 are set to step down upon completing their second terms on May 29.
Another governor will also leave office after serving a single term on the same date, while ten others are scheduled to serve a second term following recent elections.
The EFCC is conducting a thorough investigation and has requested the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to provide the assets declaration forms of these officials, as stated in an official communication between the two agencies seen by the platform.
The specific cases that the EFCC is pursuing against these officials have not been disclosed.

However, in Nigeria, incumbent presidents, vice presidents, governors, and deputy governors are immune from criminal prosecution, which limits the EFCC and other anti-corruption agencies to preliminary investigations.
