Former youth international Gift Atulewa,is dead. He passed away at the age of 38.
The Delta State Football Association spokesperson Azuka Chiemeka confirmed the sad news to newsmen.
According to Azuka, Atulewa died on Tuesday morning around 7 a.m. due to complications from high blood pressure.
He explained that Atulewa had been managing his blood pressure issues, but his condition worsened in the days leading up to his death.
“We just buried his wife last month, which may have contributed to his condition. He had blood pressure problems, but had been managing them. Just two days ago, his condition worsened, and after being taken to the hospital, they diagnosed him with malaria. However, his blood pressure remained dangerously high, and we lost him this morning,” Azuka said.
Azuka also revealed that Atulewa had recently participated in a football tournament in Delta State. “He was part of the ex-Uwei team from his hometown and scored the opening goal of the tournament with a trademark free kick about three weeks ago when the competition began.”
Atulewa had recently completed a coaching course in Côte d’Ivoire, though sadly, he will not be able to use the certificate he earned.
Atulewa began his football career at Bayelsa United F.C. and later played for Ocean Boys F.C. and Warri Wolves F.C. He was also a key player for the Nigerian U-20 team during the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands.
His death adds him to the growing list of former members of the 2005 U-20 team who have passed away, joining Olufemi Adebayo and Isaac
