The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has urged the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to fish out the police officers that assaulted two of its members.
Newspot gathered that two members of the union, among whom were NUJ Secretary in Ogun State, Bunmi Adigun, and his cameraman, were assaulted by policemen attached to Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State on Friday.
The duo were attacked by the policemen at Joga-Orile in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The union, in the statement issued by the VP of the zone, Comrade Ronke Samo, and Secretary, Comrade Abdulrasaq Alege, on Saturday, described the action of the security agents as barbaric, uncivilized and uncalled for in a democratic setting .
It stressed that the action of the overzealous security agents attached to Adeleke stands condemned by the entire NUJ Zone B comprising Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti states.
The union described the attack on the duo as an affront and embarrassment to the fundamental principles of press freedom.
“The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone B condemned in its entirety the attack on Two of our members in Ogun state, Comrade Bunmi Adigun and one other by some of the overzealous and undemocratic security agents attached to Gov Ademola Adeleke at Joga-Orile in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State on Friday.
“The attack on our members stands as a direct attack on the entire NUJ members across Zone B and Nigeria in general and the union will not allow it to be swept under the carpet.
“The NUJ zone B hereby demand for the investigation of the assault on our members at Joga-Orile in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State and that the concerned overzealous security agents should be identified and be sanctioned by the concerned authorities.
“In line with the above, the NUJ zone B is hereby calling on the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector General of Police, (IGP) to fish out the erring Policemen and bring them to book so as to forestall such act of overzealousness on Journalists in the future,” it said.
