A health care company, Sanofi, has advised people living with diabetes against treating the condition on their own without seeing a doctor.

The General Manager, Sanofi, Folake Odediran, disclosed this on Monday in commemoration of the World Diabetes Day 2022.

Odediran stated that it was important for people to be properly informed on diabetes so as to get appropriate treatment from primary health care centres.

She said, “Diabetes is a big healthcare concern, not just because of the economic impact, but the impact it has on individuals who are living with diabetes and their families.

“Oftentimes, when people are not well informed about diabetes, they think they’re going to die soon. My message to them is that people who are living with diabetes should make sure they meet with their doctors regularly. We have good primary healthcare facilities, and we have good doctors who can meet with these patients for appropriate care, so there shouldn’t be a thing about patients treating the condition.”

Odediran noted that stakeholders should involve diabetic patients in decisions and policies surrounding the condition, adding that it was not a death sentence.

The firm’s Medical Head, Dr Joseph Muga, added that care and treatment of the sickness required urgent attention as the number of patients was increasing.

He said, “Diabetes actually affects younger people so we anticipate that the number is likely to be higher. The most important thing is that diabetes is a big issue that requires urgent attention because the numbers are increasing.”
