fifteen police officers are missing following an attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Agadama Community, located in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State in Nigeria.
The officers were part of a team conducting a rescue mission for abducted individuals located in a forest at Bentsiga Buplesi Community in Ugheli.
This tragic incident follows the death of a policeman from the Force Intelligence Response Team (IRT) during a separate rescue operation earlier in the week in Delta State.
Details have emerged regarding the circumstances surrounding the deaths of IRT members.
Initial reports suggested that nine officers lost their lives in the ambush, the Delta State Police Command has not disclosed the official death toll at this time.
It is now known that approximately 20 detectives set out to rescue the abducted individuals, utilizing advanced technology to locate the kidnappers’ hideout in the forest. Communication challenges arose when mobile phone networks ceased functioning within the forest, preventing the officers from calling for reinforcements.
Furthermore, some of the fallen officers were reportedly able to send messages via SMS and WhatsApp to their superior, alerting them to the communication issues. The profiles of those lost, including Inspector Abbey Olu, reflect their dedication and commitment to their duties. The exact number of casualties and missing persons continues to be verified by authorities, with an official statement expected soon from the Delta State Police Command.
It was also reported that the unnamed officers missing from the incident, including Inspector Abel Olobum, Sergeant Ayere Paul, Sergeant Cyril Obretim, and three others from the PMF 51, are among those whose fate remains uncertain. Efforts to reach the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Edafe Bright, for comment have been unsuccessful as investigations into the tragic event continue. The encounter with the suspected Fulani herdsmen resulted in gunfire, leading to the disappearance of the officers and the escape of the prime suspect.
