Washington D.C. / Abuja – In a significant development drawing global attention, multiple top U.S. federal agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Department of State, and U.S. Attorneys’ Offices, are scheduled to release long-requested investigative reports involving Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu this Friday, May 2, 2025.

The release is in compliance with a directive issued by Judge Beryl Howell of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The court, in early April, ordered the agencies—excluding the CIA—to jointly file status reports and relevant documents relating to the case, after ruling that continued withholding of the information was “neither logical nor plausible.”

The court order stems from a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit filed by American transparency advocate Aaron Greenspan. Greenspan alleged that U.S. agencies failed to comply with federal law by not releasing documents regarding purported investigations into Tinubu and three other individuals: Lee Andrew Edwards, Mueez Abegboyega Akande, and Abiodun Agbele. The investigations reportedly date back to the 1990s and were said to be linked to alleged drug trafficking operations.

Between 2022 and 2023, Greenspan filed no fewer than 12 FOIA requests targeting six U.S. federal agencies, including the FBI and the DEA, demanding records of criminal probes involving the aforementioned individuals.

While legal experts indicate that the ruling could still be appealed, the presidency in Abuja has responded by downplaying the reports, insisting that the issues raised are neither new nor incriminating.

The expected release of these documents has reignited public discourse in Nigeria and among diaspora communities, with many anticipating potential political, legal, and diplomatic ramifications depending on the content of the disclosures.
