Fantasy Premier League managers all over the globe will be agonising over who’s in and who’s out of their team with not long to go before today’s (Friday, August 11) 6.30pm Gameweek 1 deadline.
So, as the wheeling and dealing intensifies in the final hours leading up to today’s cut-off, let’s take a look at some of the biggest bargains available on the market to help give you an advantage over those annoyingly competitive family, friends and work colleagues.
Goalkeepers
Andre Onana – £5m
Manchester United’s new signing will be the undisputed man between the Old Trafford sticks following the departure of the long-serving David De Gea.
The Red Devils were only breached 43 times last season and, crucially, Onana is £0.5m cheaper than the likes of Alisson and Ederson.
Alphonse Areola – £4m
Areola has proved a huge hit with players and is the most picked keeper on the game.
£4m is as cheap as it gets for a goalkeeper and Areola and he could even usurp the injury-prone Lukasz Fabianski as the Hammers’ first choice.
Defenders
Levi Colwill – £4.5m
Colwill has returned to Chelsea following last season’s hugely successful loan spell at Brighton.
Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear that the England U21 defender is part of his Stamford Bridge rebuild and he could be set for significant game time owing to the injuries sustained by Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile.
Jordan Beyer – £4m
The German played 30 games for Vincent Kompany’s impressive Championship winning side last season and he looks certain to be a first team regular for the Clarets again this time around in the top flight.
FPL managers are always looking to maximise that final £4m defender slot and Beyer might just be the answer
Sven Botman – £4.5m
Newcastle’s defence resembled a fortress at times last season, conceding a joint-fewest 33 goals.
Botman is a guaranteed starter in Eddie Howe’s team and the Magpies should be further solidified by the arrival of AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Midfielders
Julio Enciso – £5.5m
Enciso appears to be the latest gem unearthed in the transfer market by Brighton having scored four goals in just 20 league appearances last season.
Brighton have an attractive set of fixtures to open up, starting with Luton (H), Wolves (A) and West Ham (H).
Bryan Mbeumo – £6.5m
Mbeumo was an attractive asset for managers even before his FPL position was switched to a midfielder.
The Brentford star scored 150 points last term and looks certain to be the Bees’ penalty taker in the absence of Ivan Toney, who is serving an eight month suspension for breaking FA betting rules.
Kaoru Mitoma – £6.5m
Brighton’s Japanese sensation was arguably the break-out player in last season’s Premier League, bagging seven goals and five assists as he ran rings around the division’s fullbacks.
Mitoma will back himself to improve on those numbers in his second season in English football, and given the frequency in which he picks up the ball in the penalty box, who would bet against him bagging more goals and assists.
Strikers
Joao Pedro – £5.5m
It seems large swathes of the FPL community have already cottoned on to the value for money Joao Pedro could bring, with the 21 year-old the seventh most popular pick in the forward positions.
The Brazilian’s 11 goals and 4 assists for Watford in the Championship last season were enough to convince Brighton to part with a club-record £30m – and his two penalties in pre-season suggests he will be on spot-kick duty for the Seagulls this term.
Sasa Kalajdzic – £5m
Kalajdzic suffered an ACL injury just minutes into his Wolves debut last season having moved to the Midlands from Stuttgart in the summer.
The 6ft 7in Austrian, who scored at an impressive rate in the Bundesliga, has looked sharp in pre-season and he could prove an attractive offer to managers at just £5m.
