The Nigerian Senate has launched a critical investigation into the disappearance of 3,907 assault rifles and pistols from the Nigeria Police Force armory, putting Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun under intense scrutiny.

During Tuesday’s Senate Public Accounts Committee session, the IGP faced tough questioning regarding the missing weapons. The investigation stems from a 2019 Auditor-General’s report that revealed an alarming total of 178,459 firearms unaccounted for as of December 2018, with 88,078 being AK-47 rifles.

The Auditor-General’s representative, Olu Samuel Godwin, presented findings from the arms movement register showing significant discrepancies. A particularly concerning detail emerged regarding the 21 Police Mobile Force Squadron in Abuja, which reported no missing firearms despite records indicating 46 missing arms between 2000 and 2019.

In their defense, the Police could only account for 15 of the 3,907 missing rifles mentioned in the report. Their request for a closed-door session was promptly rejected by the Senate Committee, though they were granted additional time to conduct a thorough investigation.

The Senate’s firm stance on this matter reflects growing concerns over national security implications, as the missing weapons could potentially end up in wrong hands. The Committee has demanded full accountability from the Police Force regarding these missing arms.
